The Boxes interface

Collection view

When you first launch Boxes, the greeting tells you to click the + button to create your first box. On subsequent visits, Boxes opens in the collection view, displaying thumbnails of your boxes in a grid. Frequently used boxes appear at the top of the list. Collection view allows you to:

  • Click + to create a box.

  • Click a box to launch a virtual machine session.

  • Search for a box.

  • Right-click on a box to choose Open in New Window, Force Shutdown, Clone, Delete, or to open the Preferences view for the box.

The assistant

Clicking + launches the box creation Assistant, which guides you through the process of box creation.

Preferences view

Right-click a box in the collection view and select Preferences to open the preferences view, where you can configure some of the details of your box. The preferences view allows you to display or change settings depending on which of the following tabs is selected:

The Resources tab

  • View the Name of your box and its IP Address (when available).

  • Set the values for CPU, Memory and Storage of your box.

  • Set the Allow running in background preference of your box.

  • Enable 3D acceleration for supported operating systems.

  • Access the logs of your box in the Troubleshooting logs option, which can be useful for troubleshooting issues.

  • The Edit Configuration option lets you edit the libvirt domain configuration of your box manually.

The Devices and Shares tab

  • Choose the USB Devices to redirect to your box.

  • Set the Shared Folders to be made available in your box.

  • Set a CDROM/DVD Drive file or device to make available in your box.

The Snapshots tab

With Snapshots you can create and manage snapshots of your box.
